DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMME
Field of Study: English Language
Introduction
The programme aims to equip candidates with in-depth knowledge of theories and practices relevant to the field of English language studies. In this programme, candidates are exposed to the latest developments in applied linguistics, English for specific purposes, language and media communication, and language in literary studies. The programme aims to train professionals from the public and private sectors, especially lecturers from public and private institutions of higher learning, to be specialists in the English language.
Entrance Requirements
Candidates should have a Master’s degree in English language studies, English literature or related fields from recognized universities.
Candidates who have a Master’s degree by coursework and research must have obtained a CGPA of 3.2.
Candidates who hold a Master’s degree by coursework only must have obtained a CGPA of 3.5.

Programme Requirements
a. Coursework Requirement
Candidates pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy degree are required to complete a minimum of 12 credits of coursework. The credits are distributed among compulsory and elective courses, as follows:
Compulsory Courses 6 credits
Elective Courses 6 credits Total 12 credits

BBI 6401 Thesis Writing 3 credits
BBI 6402 Quantitative Methods in Language Research 3 credits or
BBI 6403 Qualitative Inquiry in Language Research 3 credits
ii. Elective Courses (6 credits)
Two courses from any M.A. specialisation package subject to approval by the supervisory committee.
A doctoral candidate is required to register for the course SPSS 6999 Doctoral Research. This course entails a research project and at the end of the candidature, the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will then be sent for examination and a viva voce will be held to determine the candidate’s competence in the area study.
ii. Seminar
SPS 6903 Seminar
A doctoral candidate is required to enrol on the SPS 6903 course that represent a defense of the research proposal. This course has to be taken in the second semester of study. The course will be assessed and the candidate will be given Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory grade.
iii. Comprehensive Examination
A candidate pursuing the doctoral programme is required to pass a written and oral comprehensive examination. This examination is attempted upon completion of all coursework stipulated in the programme. It is designed to evaluate the candidate’s knowledge in the area of study, and his or her ability to integrate knowledge about research and theory to address basic issue in the area concerned as well as to understand related research methods and design.

Basic Fee First semester RM 1,900.00 Second and subsequent semesters RM 1,650.00 Final semester RM 2,650.00
International students have to pay additional fees of RM 1,000.00 per semester
