Selangor Sultan bestows awards to top UPM staff

SERDANG, May 11 - Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) accorded its recognition and appreciation to some 22 academic and non-academic staff who have proven their mettle in teaching, research and innovation, professional services, magazine publication and consultancy in a ceremony - Majlis Gemilang Akademia Putra (MGAP) 2016 -  which was graced by Selangor Sultan, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also UPM Chancellor.

 

The awards are presented by MGAP to staff who have carried out excellent exploration works or attempts and are involved in broadening of knowledge and educational services for the university and also the country.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award under the Akademia Putra Special Award for staff who displayed excellence and high quality achievement in the fields of teaching, research, leadership and contributions to the society was presented to Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah Yusoff from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences.

When met by the press, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Khatijah expressed her gratitude to UPM and described her achievement as a reward for all scientists in UPM.

Along with a group of researchers, she succeeded in developing a vaccine to treat cancer.

Meanwhile, four received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award under Teaching (Excellent Lecturer Category) which went to Assoc. Prof. Dr Wan Zuhainis Saad from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr Suraya Abdul Rashid (Engineering Faculty); Dr Norazlina Mohd Kiram (Modern Languages and Communication Faculty); and Dr Nooreen Noordin (Educational Studies Faculty).

Four others who received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award under Teaching (Young Lecturer Category) were Dr. Che Azurahanim Che Abdullah (Science Faculty); Dr Hasliza Abu Hassim (Veterinary Medicine Faculty); Dr Mohd Razif Harun (Engineering Faculty); and Dr Akmar Hayati Ahmad Ghazali (Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication).   

Two were bestowed the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award – Research and Innovation (Excellent Researcher Category) – Prof Ir. Dr Mohd Sapuan Salit (Engineering Faculty/Institute of Tropical Forests and Forestry Products); and Dr Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos (Design and Architecture Faculty).

Another double for Prof Ir. Dr Mohd Sapuan was when he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award under the category of Research and Innovation (Publication of Magazines/Journals) while another recipient under the same category was Dr Nur Dalilah Dahlan (Design and Architecture Faculty).  

The Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award for Research and Innovation under the Young Researcher Category was won by Dr Muhammad Hafiz Abu Bakar (Engineering Faculty) while Prof. Dr Mohamed Hanafi Musa (Agriculture Facuty) was named the recipient for the Innovation and Commercialization Category.

The Research and Innovation (Arts and Creativity Category) award was received by Assoc. Prof Dr Kamariah Kamarudin (Modern Languages and Communication Faculty) while Dr Mohd Yusof Saari (Faculty of Economics and Management) was named the recipient for Book Publication category.

Three received the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship Award under the Professional Services Category - Prof Ir Dr Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir (Engineering Faculty), Mohd Nazri Noh (Modern Languages and Communication) and Shamsuddin Johan (Environment Studies Faculty).

Three staff who received similar awards under Excellent Consultant Category were Dr Hanina Halimatusaadiah Hamsan (Human Ecology Faculty), Assoc. Prof. Dr Haslinda Abdullah (Human Ecology Faculty) and Prof Dr Azni Idris (Faculty of Engineering).

In her speech at the event, UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datin Paduka Dr Aini Ideris said MGAP will accord recognition and appreciation to university staff who displayed excellence in their performances, potentials and traits and made the university proud at both national and international levels.

“This ceremony features excellence in innovation in the process of teaching, research, consultancy and services for each and every staff,” she said.

Royal Chancellor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, also launched two books -  Discovering 100 Birds of Universiti Putra Malaysia and  Orchids in the Montane Forests of Peninsular Malaysia at the event. - UPM
